The Weed of the Month has featured invasive plants which take over the sage steppe, pushing out native plants and creating fire hazards. Invasives often have little or no nutrition value and many are poisonous. Here are ones to watch out for in Harney County

Yellow Starthistle. Besides taking over it is poisonous to horses

Pheasant eye. Dangerous to horses and pigs. Toxicity increases when cut and dried.

Halogeton. Dangerous to cattle and sheep

Perennial Pepperweed. Dangerous to horses.

Tansy ragwort. Dangerous to horses and cattle

Goathead. Not toxic, but the burr could damage the mouth and digestive tract of an animal.

St. John’s Wort. Invasive. Dangerous to horses, cattle, sheep, dogs and cats.

Henbane. Dangerous to cattle, fish and birds.

African Rue. Dangerous to horses and possibly humans.
