A friend who moved here referred to Harney County as “A Severe Beauty”. It’s an apt description. Many traveling through or making a short local stop may not appreciate the scenery on the dry side of the state. It requires a discerning eye, particularly with flowers. Though there are some exceptions, like the Balsamroot you see driving Hwy 395 North, most of the spring flowers are thumbnail-sized and close to the ground. They require a closer look.
When you are walking your dog or hiking to a favorite fishing spot do you ever wish you could identify the flowers you see? Check this website: www.wildflowersearch.org. The basic online search is free but downloading an app to a smartphone may incur a cost. You can search for the flower based on location, time of year, color and number of petals (or other features).
Other flowers in bloom in Harney County are phlox and violas.
If you identify and photograph any flowers, please share them with us.
